Birth*James R. G. Russell was born in 1870 at Georgia.1
Marriage*He married Martha (Mattie) Joy Curtis, daughter of William Jeptha Curtis and Parthenia Miranda Green, on 15 June 1925 at Gunter, Grayson, Texas.1
Death*James R. G. Russell died on 6 October 1931 at Gunter, Grayson, Texas.1
ObitJames R. G.'s obituary was published in the Gunter News on 8 October 1931:
With the tragical death on Tuesday afternoon, October 6, of the Rev. J.R.G. Russell, whose life was prematurely snatched from its itinerancy, the whole of Gunter and her surrounding communities was thrown into an abyss of sorrow. The tragical occurrence took place after three o’clock at the family residence two miles west of Gunter. Shortly after, the report became widespread and numerous friends immediately gathered to be of comfort and assistance in all available manner.
. . . Since he was a mere lad of six years he had lived a life of consecrated Christian efforts. It was then that he was converted and soon thereafter he joined the Burning Bush Baptist Church in Georgia, his native state. Before passing out of his teens he was ordained a minister by that church. . . . At the age of nineteen, he came from Lafayette, Ga., to Mart, Texas, where he continued his ministerial duties. In 1892, when he was twenty-two years old, he entered Baylor University. . . . Six years later he migrated to California where for the following ten years, he devoted himself to missionary work. Leaving there. . . he went to the Louisville, Kentucky Theological Seminary, where he remained for a period of time before returning to his beloved Georgia. . . He entered Crozier Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, from which institution he went to Colgate Seminary and eventually found himself realizing a long cherished desire to study at Columbia University. Completing this portion of his work. . . took him consecutively to Nebraska, Iowa, Oregon, Washington and ultimately back to California, where he gave himself enthusiastically his religious labors until 1925. It was then he returned to Texas and chose to settle in Gunter. It was then also that was married to Miss Curtis. . . . His time has, for the past six years, been largely devoted to the strengthening and rebuilding of weak church in both Grayson and Cooke Counties, though he retained the pastorship of the Baptist church at Valley View. Additionally, his avocation has been farming.
Funeral services were conducted at the family residence Wednesday, Oct. 7, at one o’clock, with the Rev. A.D. Foreman, Jr., of Gainesville in charge. After this simple but impressive service, the funeral cortege left for Waco, where the body will be laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery at 10 a.m. today. Five brothers, with his wife, survive: H.H. Russell of Ringold, Ga., B.C. of Memphis, Tenn., W.T., of Dallas, H.J. of Wharton, Texas, and Dr. W.R. Russell of Purdon, Texas.2
