Letha Nay Nielson, better known to her friends as Candy, passed from this world Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017, at the age of 96. She was born March 31, 1921, in Ovilla, Texas to William Wade Curtis and Edith Davenport Curtis.

Her early years were hard, she, along with her family, picked cotton in the fields of central Texas. She always said she loved school but in 1933 her mother passed away and she had to quit school to take care of her younger brothers. She returned to school finally and graduated from Red Oak High School in 1941. After being encouraged by a local doctor, she entered the University of Texas's nursing program and completed her studies in 1946 as a Registered Nurse. After working as a nurse in Galveston, Texas and Denver, she married Glade Nielson on Dec. 17, 1949, and they were married for 55 years. She quit nursing to raise her sons but returned to nursing and worked for many years for San Juan Regional Medical Center. For most of her life, Candy was an avid bowler, she continued bowling up until last May, many of those years with teammates Ralph and Virginia Trotter. She was also a wicked gin rummy player.

Candy was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Glade; her sister, Annie Etta Boswell; and brothers, William, John and James Curtis. She is survived by her sons, Gary of Farmington and Rick (Mary) of Colorado Springs; four grandchildren, Thorin of Portland, Stephanie (Mark) Mahnke of San Mateo, Calif., Morgana (Joe) of Aztec, Erin (Jaxx) of Albuquerque; and three great-grandchildren, Quinlan, Maddie, and Anna. She is also survived by Nancy Homler and Franceen Webb. A viewing will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12 at Brewer, Lee and Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E. Ute St. in Farmington. A graveside service for Candy will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13 at Greenlawn Cemetery, 1606 N. Dustin Ave. in Farmington. Pallbearers will be Gary Nielson, Rick Nielson, Thorin Nielson, Erin Nielson, Morganna Nielson and Jaxx Nagro. We would like to thank Dr. Mark Dwinell and Basin Home Health and Hospice for their assistance and caring.5
