(Witness) Bio[Note this bio has some significant errors (A.F.)]
A. E. Koffel was born east of Rochester, Indiana, in 1858, the son of Daniel and Mary Ann (Hoover) Koffel. His paternal grandparents, Henry and Eliza (Halpooner) Koffel, were natives of Pennsylvania, the father of the former having come from Germany with six brothers to settle there. Henry Koffel and his wife settled in Wabash county, Indiana, and were pioneer farmers of that section where their old home still stands. They had twelve children the last of whom died in 1920 at the age of ninety years. He died in the county of his adoption and is buried in the Nichols cemetery and his wife passed away in Kosciusko county, being buried in the Squirrel Creek cemetery. Henry and Sarah (Curtis) Hoover, the maternal grandparents of our subject, were natives of Tippecanoe county, Indiana, and Miami county, Ohio, respectively. In 1836 they settled in Fulton county near the present town of Athens, which was founded by his sons Jacob and Alonzo. They were one of the first families to settle in that section, and for this reason when Henry township was created, it was named in honor of Henry Hoover. He acquired much land in that part of the county through his untiring industry. He and his wife are buried at Mt Hope. Daniel Koffel was born in I828 and received his education in the pioneer schools of Wabash county. He later removed to Kosciusko county and in 1849 took up his residence in Fulton county, working on the farm of William Rannels east of Athens. Sometime afterward he purchased a farm of eighty acres in that same vicinity and at such an early day he was forced to clear the timber from the land and to make all of the necessary improvements. his wife inherited eighty acres from her father's estate. He died here in 1900, his wife passing away in 1892. He had six children as follows: Sarah Jane; William, who died in infancy; J. F; Emma, deceased; A. E., the subject of this sketch, and Scott, deceased. :A. E. Koffel received his education in the public schools of Athens and then followed the pursuits of agriculture in his home community until the fall of 1881, at which time he removed to his present farm of one hundred and twenty-one acres in Liberty township. He cleared and ditched the land and has placed on it all of the improvements that make it one of the best farms in the township. Although strictly speaking he engages in general farming, he nevertheless devotes considerable attention to stock-raising in which field he has proven very successful. On November 6, 1881, he was united in marriage to Ella Pence, the daughter of John Pence, a prominent pioneer of Fulton county. To Mr. and Mrs. Koffel five children have been born: Roy, Maude, Alfred, Sylvia, and Edna. He and his wife accept the tenets of the United Brethren religion and are devoted members of the church at Fulton.8
CensusHe appeared on the census of 4 April 1930 at Liberty Twp., Fulton, Indiana, ED 6, sheet 2A, occupation farmer, owned farm, radio, no children.9
Death*He died on 4 May 1952 at Fulton, Indiana, at age 93; buried at the Fulton Cemetery.1

(Witness) ObitElla C. Pence witnessed the Obit of Mary Elizabeth Farris on 25 October 1929 at Rochester Sentinel, Rochester, Fulton, Indiana,
Mrs. Mary PENCE, aged 93, one of the best known pioneer residents of Fulton county, died at 12:30 Friday noon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Lowe, in the Mt. Olive neighborhood. Death was due to a complication of diseases due to advanced years from which she had been ill for the past two weeks. Mary FARRIS was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 26, 1836, and came with her parents to Fulton county when only eight years of age, settling in the Talma community. Upon reaching womanhood she was married to John PENCE, who passed away many years ago. While her husband was living they made their home on a farm southeast of Rochester, but following his death she moved to Rochester. However, for the past several years she has made her home with her daughters. She was a member of the Rochester Methodist church. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. John OLIVER and Mrs. Christina STINSON, of Rochester; Mrs. John LOWE, of near Mt. Olive; Mrs. Al KOFFEL, near Nyona Lake, and Mrs. Retta LOWE, of Fulton, now visiting in Denver, Colo. Eighteen grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at the Rochester Methodist church at two o’clock. Rev. G. R. CRANE, of the Fulton United - - - - burial will be made in the Mt. Zion cemetery.
Mary Elizabeth FARRIS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. FARRIS, of Ohio, was born on July 26, 1836, and after a brief but severe illness she departed to be with Christ Oct. 25, 1929, at the age of 93 years, 2 months and 29 days. She spent most of her childhood in Bloomingsburg, Ind., when at the age of 11 years she came to live with Rev. Harvey FERRY, a Methodist minister and with whom she made her home until she grew into young womanhood. On Aut 12, 1885, she was united in marriage to John PENCE. To this union seven children were born, five of whom are still living, two having preceded her in death in the early years of their life. Soon after her marriage she came with her husband to reside near Rochester where she spent a number of years enjoying the fellowship of her husband and family and neighbors. After the death of her husband, Mr. John Pence, which took place Oct. 11, 1893, she came to live in the city of Rochester and was loved by all who knew her. Early in life she united with the Methodist church at Union, Fulton county and later moved her membership to Rochester Methodist church. For many years she has been a faithful member until age and sickness made it impossible for her to attend. Mrs. Pence, on the testimony of her devoted daughters, has always been a faithful and loving mother. Patient she has been in all her affliction. Ministers of the gospel always found a welcome in her home and they in turn enjoyed the hospitality of her home at all times. During the last few years she has been in ill health and for a long time was tenderly cared for in the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. KOFFEL, northeast of Fulton, also by other members of her family. The last few weeks she spent in the home of Mr. and Mrs. John LOWE, where she took seriously ill and although loving hearts and hands ministered to her every need, she passed away to her reward to be forever with the Lord, which is far better. She leaves to mourn her departure five daughters as follows: Teena STINSON, of Rochester, Ind; Retta LOWE, Ella KOFFEL and Minnie LOWE, of Fulton, and Della OLIVER, of Rochester; also 18 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren and a large number of relatives and friends.8

ObitWilliam H.'s obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 25 February 1927:

William H. DEARDORFF, aged 85 years, prominent pioneer of Fulton county, died Friday evening at his farm home directly west of Athens where he has resided for a number of years. Death resulted from high blood pressure from which ailment the deceased had been rendered an invalid for the past four years. Mr. Deardorff was perhaps one of the best and most favorably known residents in the eastern part of Fulton county. William Henry, son of Isaac and Rebecca DEARDORFF, was born near Canton, Ohio, August 14, 1842. The father died when William was but six years of age and at the age of 14 the young lad started out to face life’s burdens single handed. On Sept. 10, 1861, Deardorff enlisted with the 19th regiment of Ohio volunteers. He fought in several of the leading battles of that conflict and was taken prisoner in the year of 1863 serving a long period of time in the Libby and Andersonville prisons. Later he was released from prison through an exchange of prisoners and continued in the service until he was honorably discharged on Feb. 4, 1865. After the war he was engaged for seven years in the government service in the western states. Mr. Deardorff then returned to Rochester where on July 30, 1876 he was united in marriage to Sarah Jane KOFFEL. For 15 years he followed the painters trade in about Rochester, later removing to a farm just west of Athens, where the remainder of his life was spent. William Deardorff was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Royal Arch Masons, this city, and the McClung Post G.A.R. He leaves one daughter, Mrs. Charles GOOD, of Ft. Wayne, and two sons, Fred [DEARDORFF], of Wayland, Michigan, and Floyd [DEARDORFF], at home. Mrs. Deardorff preceded her husband in death on Nov. 19th, 1925. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the farm home west of Athens, with the Rev. Jas. W. NIVEN officiating.1

ROCHESTER UNION SPY, Friday, April 28, 1876 Old uncle EPH. DAUGliERTY and JIMMY KOFFEL got up a very spirited argument about a division fence a few days ago. The fence was between them when they began, but uncle Eph. opened the discussion with a piece of fence rail, and Jimmy followed up with a few knock-down arguments that sent Uncle Eph. to grass, where he came to the conclusion that since they had both gotton on one side (of the fence) he would make the closing speech before Esquire STRADLEY. No one need doubt this statement as the piece of rail used in the discussion is still to be seen.6
