It was a great shock to Rochester people to learn that John [R.] SHOUP, while coming up town early this morning, was suddenly afflicted with heart failure and died within a few minutes. He had not been well for some time with heart trouble. When in front of A. J. DILLON’s house he was seen to stagger, and Max GOLDBERG was the first to reach him. Several men assisted in carrying him into Henry MEYER’s residence. Body was removed to the Shoup residence in the northwest part of town. John Shoup was born in Pickaway county, Ohio, August 20, 1828, and was 73 years 3 months and 14 days old. Married to Julia MOORE and after her death and while employed in Clay county, Missouri, he married Helen BARRETT in 1853, and about eight years later they came to Rochester. Survivors are wife, two brothers, three sisters and seven children. One brother, Jacob [SHOUP], lives in Winamac and the other, Marion [SHOUP], in Starke county. where she was married to the late John R. SHOUP. In the year 1861 they moved to Rochester, where she has since resided. To this marriage were born ten children, three of whom died in infancy. Of the seven living there are three boys and four girls, viz: John F. SHOUP and Will D. SHOUP, Chicago; Chas. M. SHOUP, of Texas; Mrs. Mary [SHOUP] BLOOM, Chicago; Mrs.Sidney HOOVER, Tennessee; and Mrs. Fred HOFFMAN, Mrs. C[ommodore] W. [Alla M. SHOUP] MONTGOMERY, of Rochester. She was long a member of the Presbyterian church and a christian woman. The funeral will be held at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Hoffman, Tuesday morning, at 10 o’clock, interment in the I..O.O.F cemetery. The remains may be viewed from 9 to 10 o’clock.²

He had worked in Rochester for the former Armour Corporation and the former Crystal Dairy in maintenance. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Max (Marilyn) SHULTZ, Rochester, and Barbara FREEMAN, Huntsville, Ark; two sons, Denny and Kenton J. [HOOVER], both of Naples, Fla. eleven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Preceding in death were two sisters, Sylvia FLOHR and Miriam SMITH, and three brothers, Paul, Victor and Doyne [HOOVER]. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Zimmerman Family Funeral Home, Rochester, with the Rev. C Allan HAZEN officiating. Burial will be in the Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Survivors include one brother Glenn HOOVER, Rochester; one niece, Ethel WOOD, Akron; one nephew, Sidney HOOVER, St. Joseph, Mo; several great and great-great nieces. He was preceded in death by one sister, Ethel DANALD, two brothers, Lyle [HOOVER] and Leslie HOOVER. and one nephew, Allen David HOOVER. Graveside services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ever-Rest Memorial Park, Cass County with Rev. Frank WHITAKER officiating. No visitation is planned.
