James Monroe Edwards, well-known farmer of this county, died at 12:45 p.m. today at his home near Tasso. He had been in declining health for some time and had been critically ill since Sunday. Mr. Edwards would have celebrated his 72nd birthday had he lived until Nov. 22. He was born in Ducktown, but came to Bradley County when a young man and had since resided here, engaged in farming until ill health forced his retirement. He was twice married, his first marriage was to Miss Sallie A. Culton and his second wife, who survives him, was Miss Belle McCarty.
Besides his widow, he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. French Julian, of Tasso, Miss Nancy Edwards, this city; Mrs. Ray Merryman, Chattanooga, and Mrs. W.O. Dunn, Clayton, Ala; two sons, Hayden, of Fayetteville, Tenn., and Ben Arthur, who resides at home. Three sisters, Mrs. S.V. Eldredge, of this city; Mrs. W.S. Palmer, of Chattanooga; Mrs. Hugh Hayes, of Stillwell, Okla; four brothers, Edward and Erwin Edwards, of Charleston, Bascom of Concord, Tenn., and Horace, of Rock Springs.12

She is survived by her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Eldredge; two sons, John and Nat M. Eldredge, all of Cleveland; two sisters, Mrs. W.S. Palmer of Chattanooga, and Mrs. H.M. Hayes of Stillwell, Okla; a brother, E.A. Edwards, Charleston, Tenn., and one grandson, Edward (Buddy) Eldredge, of Cleveland. Funeral services will be held Monday at 3 p.m. in the Broad Street Baptist Church, with Dr. E. Edward Lundy, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Fort Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Joe Schultz, Herman Schultz, August Byrd, Vastine Stickley, V.L. Stark, John Cate, William Nave and Millard Chase.3

Hayes, of Stillwell, Okla. Funeral services will be held from the Charleston Methodist Church tomorrow at 2 p.m. Interment in Methodist Cemetery, McClain in charge.10

Mrs. Mary Alice Palmer, age 79, the oldest member of Centenary Methodist Church, died late Wednesday night at her home, 1917 Bailey Avenue. She was the wife of W.S. Palmer, retired merchant, who for many years was owner of Palmer Clothing Company here.
She was the mother of Mrs. P.H. Wood and Mrs. Dilla Keener of Chattanooga, W.M. and C.A. Palmer of Memphis, and Sgt. Fred R. Palmer of the United States Army. Also surviving her are a sister, Mrs. H.M. Hayes of Stillwell, Okla; a brother, E.A. Edwards of Charleston, Tenn; five grandchildren, Mrs. Thomas E. Samuel of Memphis; Mrs. John E. Stone II of Nacogdoches, Texas; Misses Becky and Merle Louise Wood and Hewitt Wood of Chattanooga, and three great grand children. Funeral services will be held this morning at 11:30 o’clock in the chapel of National Funeral Home, with Dr. Bachman Hodge of Centenary Church officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Cornelius Bolen, E.H. Lawman, H. Fred Temple, C.S. Redwine, Ellsworth Williams and John S. Wrinkle. Mrs. Palmer was born in Ducktown, Tenn., and came to reside in Chattanooga soon after her marriage in 1894. She was active in church work for many years.9

Charleston, Tenn., Sept. 28 – Edgar Arthur Edwards, 75, well-known retired banker and merchant of Charleston, died this morning in a Cleveland hospital. He was the son of the late Burgess Alonzo Edwards and Dilla A. Edwards, pioneer residents of Ducktown, Tenn. He had been living in Charleston since he was three years old.
He was chairman of the Hiwassee Bank board of directors at Charleston. The bank was organized in 1906 by his father. In former years he was instrumental in organizing the first Charleston Light and Power Company, of which he was secretary-treasurer. He organized and operated for a number of years the Charleston water works, and was one of the founders of the first Charleston high school. He was a member of First Methodist Church of Charleston and was active in Sunday school work. He was also active in Masonry and was a member of Alhambra Shrine Temple of Chattanooga.
He was married Jun 8, 1898, to the late Maude Kibbler of Tasso, who died Feb. 6, 1938. He married Anna Polk Trousdale of Red Boiling Springs, Tenn., who survives him. He is also survived by four daughters, Mrs. Clark C. Lotspeitch, LaGrange, Ill; Mrs. Mac Gilbert of Chattanooga; Mrs. Charles R. Wright Jr., Washington, D.C; Mrs. Bernie L. McDonald of Knoxville; three sons, R.K. Edwards of Little Rock, Ark; Charles G. Edwards of Knoxville, and Victor Edwards of Cleveland; a sister, Mrs. Dora M. Hays, Stillwell, Okla; eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at the home at Charleston by the Rev. D.M. Wagner, pastor of Charleston Methodist Church, and the Rev. E.C. Berwanger, a former pastor. Burial will be in the family plot in Fort Hill Cemetery at Cleveland. Active pallbearers will be Ben A., Pharis, Marshall, Raymond, Robert and Fred Edwards. Honorary pallbearers are Nat M. Eldridge, John Eldridge, Robert Julian, John Shelton, Frank Bryan, J.E. Quisenberry, W.M. Moore, N.R. Wilson, E.S. Godsey, Tom Bates, Dan Bolen, C.C. Funeral will be Wednesday morning at 11 o’clock in the chapel of the Goodner Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Baker Jr., pastor of St. John United Methodist Church in Chattanooga, and the Rev. J. George K. Preston officiating. Interment will be in the New Friendship Cemetery in Bradley County. Goodner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.8

Nannie Emmaline Edwards, 96, a lifelong resident of Cleveland, Tenn., died Tuesday in a local nursing home. She was a member of Cleveland First Baptist Church, the Rosemary Garden Club, Friends of the Broad Street United Methodist Church, and she was a member of Harmony Chapter 143 of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years. She taught piano and competed in area horse shows and was a founder of the Save More Store at First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her nephew, Robert Julian, Tasso, Tenn; niece, Florence “Peggy” Julian Moynihan, Cleveland; several great nieces, great nephews, etc. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Fort Hill Cemetery with Dr. George K. Preston III officiating. Arrangements by Fike Funeral Home, Cleveland.2

Mac Edwards of Chattanooga, the Rev. Charles Smith of Syracuse, N.Y; Raymond Smith of Simsbury, Conn; Mrs. Suzanne E. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in the West Chapel of the Chattanooga Funeral Home with Rev. Edward Tomlinson officiating. Interment will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park.
