Thomas was the son of Samuel and Malinda (Nelson) Jones. He was born in Lynn Township, Posey County, Indiana on October 25, 1843. His parents had fourteen children, of whom Thomas was the fourth. His father Samuel was engaged in farming and stock raising and Thomas was reared on the farm, where he attended the county schools. In August of 1863, although yet under twenty years of age, he enlisted in Company H, Ninety-first Indiana regiment and fought major battles during the U S Civil War. After the war was over, he returned to Black Township, to which the family had removed in 1853, and began farming and raising stock for himself. He continued in that occupation throughout his lifetime. He was a member of the Primitive Bethel Baptist church, which was founded by his great grandfather, the Reverend Samuel Jones. In politics, he was a Democrat. On January 19, 1866 he married Mrs. Edith (Curtis) Hickley of Posey County where they were engaged in farming and stock raising. Thomas and Edith had five children: Charles, Mary, Sarah, Ida and George. Two of Edith's children by a former marriage lived with them on the farm in the 1870s and 80s: Della Hinkley and Walter Hinkley. His wife Edith died on September 22, 1917 and Thomas passed away four years later on March 4, 1921. Both are buried in the Bellefontaine Cemetery which is located just north of Mount Vernon, Posey County, Indiana.3
