FatherFielding/Russel's Grandfather Curtis b. c 1700
Last Edited18 Mar 2009
NoteB The only proven relationship among the men listed here as "sons" is that Fielding Sr. and John were brothers. There is circumstantial evidence that Moses and James W. also were brothers of Fielding and John.
Birth*Union County Curtis was born circa 1725 at Virginia; Virginia is highly likely but completely unproven.1
NoteB* Following the war, four South Carolina men, Fielding, James, Moses and Thomas Curtis each submitted claims for expenses or back pay arising from of the war. The fact that they filed claims does not establish a relationship.2
Death*He died before 1800 at Union, South Carolina; or Virginia; no records found.

M, b. between 1770 and 1775, d. circa 1837
FatherUnion County Curtis1 b. c 1725, d. b 1800
Last Edited9 Aug 2009
Birth*John Curtis was born between 1770 and 1775 at South Carolina; Charity stated Fielding had a brother John who wrote in the family bible; he may have been born in Virginia.2,3
NoteB On 20 February 1802, John Curtis was received by experience as a member of the Padgett's Creek Church and Union County Baptist Association.4
NoteB On 13 August 1802, the Church meeting discussed the "gifts" of John Curtis, Jesse Howard Hosea Holcombe and others, and authorized them to exercise their gift of prayer & exhortation in the bounds of the Church.4
Marriage*He married Hannah Harlan, daughter of George Harlan and Rebecca Bogan, circa 1804 at South Carolina; no marriage record.3,5
Land Purch On 23 January 1804 John Curtis purchased land at Union, South Carolina, from Fielding and Charity Curtis for $200, 150 acres lying on the southwest side of Fairforest Creek adjacent to Thomas Palmer and Elisha Bonds, once purchased by Fielding from John Hiol?6
NoteB On 13 December 1804, the Padgett's Creek Church Meeting met to discuss the objections of Brother Joseph Little against John Curtis having a letter of dismissal "for which he made application some time past." While the meeting was conferring on the matter, Brother Joseph Little "spake some unguarded & unreasonable speeches against John Curtis for which cause he is under the censure of the Church."4
NoteB On 19 January 1805, the Padgett's Creek Church Meeting once again laid over the matter between Brother Little and Brother Curtis.4
Land Sale On 13 October 1805 John Curtis sold land at Union, South Carolina, to George Little of Union County for $125, a tract of land sold by George Little to Obediah Howard, then conveyed to Jesse Howard and to John Curtis by the dower of his Wife, described as 81 acres bounded by Eliz. Browning and Welbourne, witnessed by William Welbourne and John Little, proven in court by William Welbourne on 12 February 1810; John was still a resident of Union County at the date of sale.7
NoteB The Padgett's Creek Baptist Church Meeting of 18 January 1806 granted John Curtis his letter of dismissal. One can only speculate whether the receipt of the letter of dismissal delayed John and Hannah's departure to Kentucky, but it places a narrow time frame on the date of that move.4
NoteB* On March 1806, John and Hannah Curtis were received into membership at the Mill Creek (Old Mulkey) Baptist Church, then in Barren County. They probably left the original church when the congregation split in 1809.8

NoteB On 13 February 1806, John Curtis assumed a bond to Richard Gates of Washington County, Tennessee from George Chism, $4,000 penal sum, for 200 acres on Mill Creek obtained by headright. Property adjoined Jesse Gum and "Gideon."10

Land Purch On 26 September 1808 John Curtis purchased land at Barren, Kentucky, from George Chism, for $400, described as lying on the water of Mill Creek, adjacent to Giddeon Mayfield.12
NoteB John and Hannah do not appear in the 1810 census, probably because they were living in Tennessee where no census was taken that year.13
Tax ListHe appeared on the personal property tax list of 1811 at Barren, Kentucky; 100 acres on Mill Creek, no white males over 21; apparently not a resident.9
Land Purch In 1811 John Curtis purchased land at Barren, Kentucky, from Samuel Harlan, located on Mill Creek.10
Land Sale On 11 January 1811 John Curtis sold land at Union, South Carolina, to Thomas Craven of Union District for $200, from John Curtis of Jackson County, Tennessee and Harrison Brandon of Union District by virtue of their interests in the right of Hannah Curtis and Sarah Brandon, legatees of George Harlan, dec'd late of Barren County, Kentucky, described as 200 acres lying on Fairforest, witnessed by James Mayhew and Wm Rice, proven in court by William Rice in Union District Court on 11 May 1811.14
